Finding a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist

Leaving childhood ADHD unchecked can deeply impact your child in many surprising ways. While accommodations for ADHD are improving, living with this disorder can create a disconnect in your child's mind about what they're capable of, solely because they can't “fit in” with their neurodivergent peers. ADHD can also impact their academic trajectory (particularly for those with the predominantly inattentive presentation, or ADD) and make it more challenging for them to form lasting friendships or thrive in social situations.

It's crucial that your child isn't disciplined or made to feel guilty for their symptoms. Having a child and adolescent psychiatrist who understands ADHD in children ensures they're supported with the right level of compassion. They'll be your collaborative partner in care, using your input to provide the right amount of clinical guidance. Together, we can help your child reach their full potential and feel confident doing so.

Comprehensive Evaluations and ADHD Diagnosis for Children

All beneficial treatment requires an accurate diagnosis. ADHD is complex. It often presents as many other psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder or anxiety disorder. Because of this, it's incredibly important that the symptoms of ADHD in children aren't just taken at face value — they're verified through a comprehensive evaluation.

We use an objective, FDA-approved ADHD evaluation called the QbCheck. Questionnaires and observations help capture the nuances of each child's needs. Still, this advanced testing tool is designed specifically for finding true ADHD symptoms versus normal childhood behavior or other mental health conditions. It measures your child's attention, impulsivity, and motor activity. We compare these results with a database of peers to see how they align with neurotypical and neurodivergent children.

The evaluation also looks at your family history and genetics. ADHD is highly hereditary and often runs in families. Combining objective testing with a deep dive into your child's behavior and genetic background gives us the clearest possible picture of their experience. This not only leads to better treatment outcomes, but also prevents misdiagnosis, which can happen with ADHD if the pediatrician or pediatric psychiatrist isn't using the right diagnostic tools.

Medication Management for ADHD in Children

Med Harmony focuses on safe medication management for every patient, and our pediatric patients are no exception. Our board-certified ADHD specialists prescribe medications with a conservative and careful approach. A child's biology is a major factor in adjusting doses for both stimulant and non-stimulant medications. We communicate with parents about how these medications work and what to expect before moving forward with treatment.

Children develop quickly, too, which can change medication effectiveness seemingly overnight. This is why we use a long-term continuity model with strict 30-minute minimum follow-up appointments. It gives us — and you — plenty of time to discuss dosages as they age and address any subtle side effects.

Benefits of Our Personalized ADHD Treatment Plans

Every child deserves an ADHD treatment plan that caters to their wonderfully unique brain. Our approach provides complete support focused on your child's experience, not anyone else's

Addressing Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders

Children with ADHD, especially adolescents, often experience co-occurring conditions that can complicate their brain chemistry even further. There is a high comorbidity rate between ADHD and anxiety disorders, depression, learning disorders or learning disabilities, and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Our team treats these challenges simultaneously to ensure one condition doesn't accidentally worsen another.

Collaborative Psychotherapy

Medication works for balancing brain chemistry, but complementary therapies are often a major part of a treatment plan for ADHD in children. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the best tools for learning to manage big emotions and social situations. We'll work with your child's pediatrician and therapist to ensure all medical and emotional care is aligned.

Therapy and Coaching Referrals

ADHD is a lifelong mental health condition that benefits dramatically from holistic therapies as well as psychiatric medication. If your child needs additional behavioral support, we'll help you find it with dedicated referrals for specialized child therapists. We can also recommend executive function coaches to help your child focus and accomplish their goals, even if their medication wears off for the day.

Your Child’s First ADHD Appointment

The first appointment is always a comprehensive, 60-minute evaluation where we create a welcoming space where you and your child can feel comfortable and heard. We'll review medical history, school performance, family dynamics, and behavior to assess the potential for a diagnosis. If your child is already diagnosed, we use this time to start building a collaborative treatment plan.

Parent involvement is both necessary and incredibly helpful during this process. We want you to use this time to walk us through what a day looks like for your family. Every following appointment will be at least 30 minutes to ensure we can continually monitor your child's progress and adjust their care as needed.

Symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Childhood ADHD often presents as an inability to follow instructions (even when they intend to), constant fidgeting or easy distractibility, intense emotional outbursts over minor frustrations, or difficulty focusing on tasks, especially ones they aren't interested in. These challenges can create deep shame in children as they see other children do things they feel they can't, no matter how hard they try.

Fortunately, ADHD is highly treatable with psychiatric support. Proper care from a young age can drastically improve your child's life, both now and in the future, while also protecting them from many of the co-occurring disorders (like anxiety disorders and depression) that manifest solely from living with untreated and undiagnosed ADHD.

FAQs

Q: What does a pediatric psychiatrist do for ADHD?

A child and adolescent psychiatrist specializes in understanding the neurochemistry of developing brains. For ADHD, this means they can use diagnostic testing to rule out mimicking conditions first, then offer safe medication management as needed to improve symptoms. They can also walk parents through what to expect from a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, explain the different variants, and offer holistic ways to help their child live a healthier, happier life.

Q: What is an ADHD evaluation like for a child?

An ADHD evaluation looks at your child's life as a whole to see if they present any common symptoms of ADHD. The process typically includes a clinical interview with the parents, review of teacher feedback, and FDA-approved assessment tools, like QbCheck, to get the full picture. While we value your child's thoughts and want to listen fully, this comprehensive evaluation gathers insights without unnecessary stress.

Q: What age can a child be evaluated for ADHD?

ADHD in children shows up at a very young age, yet clinical guidelines suggest parents usually wait until children are six or older before seeking diagnosis. This is partly because some symptoms, like fidgeting or impulsive behavior, may be cognitive growing pains and not necessarily indicative of any psychiatric disorders. Med Harmony provides specialized evaluations and evidence-based treatment for children ages 6 and older.

Q: What ADHD medications can be prescribed for children?

Stimulant medications, like Ritalin, Vyvanse, or Adderall, are generally the gold standard for children with ADHD. They provide fast symptom relief. Other medications, like Strattera, Clonidine, or Intuniv, are non-stimulant medications and can be excellent alternatives.

‍

Through our comprehensive evaluation, we'll determine what works best for your child's unique needs. We may also recommend specific medications for children with co-existing conditions, and ultimately, you'll always have the final say in which medication you're comfortable with trying for your child.

Q: Are stimulant medications safe for children with ADHD?

Yes. Provided the medication is prescribed and monitored by a board-certified pediatric specialist, stimulant medications are generally safe and effective for children with ADHD. However, we do take a very conservative approach to medication. We start with the lowest effective dose and monitor everything, from appetite to heart rate, to ensure the medication improves overall well-being, not just attention and focus.

Q: Does my child need therapy in addition to ADHD medication?

ADHD medication is excellent for addressing the biological mechanics. But ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that requires constant maintenance from the person diagnosed with it. We strongly encourage complementary therapies, like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to help your child develop the coping mechanisms and skills they'll need to navigate living in a neurotypical world with an ADHD diagnosis.

Q: How often will my child need ADHD medication follow-ups?

We start with once-a-month follow-ups for all new pediatric patients. This ensures that the initial prescription and diagnosis are working as intended. Once the symptoms of ADHD are stabilized and your child is showing noticeable improvements, these follow-up appointments transition to every two or three months.

Q: How do parents participate in their child’s ADHD treatment?

While we're the experts on ADHD in children, you're the ultimate expert on your child. It's important that parents stay engaged in their child's care, and we invite you to track symptom improvements to share with us during follow-up appointments. You'll also be there for all medication decisions, and we'll ensure you have access to educational materials so you can keep advocating for your child's health in every part of their life, especially in the classroom.
